Calling All Southern Bloggers!

Wed May 25, 2005 at 08:05:21 AM PDT

Hey y'all:

Are you a progressive blogger based in the deep red-state territory of the South? Do you know a good Southern progressive blog?

The Institute for Southern Studies -- a progressive "think tank/act tank" and host of FACING SOUTH, "blog of the progressive South" -- is compiling a directory of Southern-based blogs.

To let us know about your blog or one you love, visit http://www.southernstudies.org/facingsouth and leave a comment, or email us at blog@southernstudies.org (click here). You can also leave a comment below.

  •  My favorite Southern Blog (4.00 / 2)

is Daily Kos, when Southerners are on it talking about the South.  Mainly because I know a lot of Yankees and West Coasters and Rocky Mountain types are reading (and interacting with) those comments and, thus, witness something Southern besides Roy Moore and his Circus.  God bless all of you Southern and Deep Southern Kosniacs, and, of course, those Alabamians who live between Philly and Pittsburg.

an Alabamiam based in PA? We may make a special section for Southerners in exile (it's a sort of diaspora).

        •  How about transplants from elsewhere? (none / 0)

Born in Ohio (Wright-Patterson AFB), lived in DC, Idaho, and grew up in CA.  Grad school in MA, half my life in Texas.

How do I fit?  My wife's peripatations are more extensive (her first 25 years).  Born in DC, she might be considered a Southerner.

          I'm just askin'...

          •  Truth be told (none / 0)

I'm fairly agnostic on this question. On one hand, I think "born and raised" Southerners probably have a better ear for what goes on in the region and can make better sense of it.

On the other hand, I rarely find debates and labels about what makes a "real Southerner" very useful. For a long time, many talked about African-Americans -- the folks who literally made the South -- as if they weren't "real Southerners" (and still today, when folks say "Southerner," too many people instantly think of a white bubba or some such stereotype). More lately, it's been said that newcomers like Latino immigrants aren't "real Southerners." Even Native Americans are often left out! So rigid definitions in this regard aren't too helpful.

            Hope that makes sense.

. . . a Deep Southerner based in the Deep South.  But yesterday I was reminded by a Keystone Stater that it is occassionally said that Pennsylvania consists of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the Alabama in between them.  Of course, we all know the Amish are the REAL powerbrokers (God love 'em).

    •  I agree (none / 0)

Southerners on DKos always brings an interesting interchange. We also want to draw attention to the Southerners who have taken the initiative to launch their own blogging projects deep in the heart of the Southland.

  •  I live and blog in Baton Rouge, LA (none / 0)

    My blog is UncommonSense.

Of course, my subject matter is not always related to Southern issues, but as a lifelong Dixie-dweller (Louisville, KY is the furthest point north that I have lived), I cannot help but consider myself a southern blogger.

    •  Thanks (none / 0)

Blogging just about Southern issues isn't a requirement. It's more about the geography of where you're based.

      •  Louisiana is easily... (none / 0)

... one of the reddest of the red states.  I did a cursory Google search for "Louisiana liberal blogs" and of all things, the #1 search result was a conservative blog.  That's how conservative Louisiana is.

There is a site called Louisiana Blogs, but most of them look like cultural and sports blogs.

Our state Democratic party doesn't have a blog.  We barely have a Democratic party, frankly.  Ours is the state party chairman who, upon his election, said that our state does not need a Democratic agenda or a Republican agenda. What it needs, he said, is a "Louisiana agenda," whatever that means.

Imagine that.  We have a state Democratic party chairman who does not believe the state needs a Democratic agenda.  It begs the question as to why even need a Democratic Party.

Can you imagine the head of a state or local Republican Party chapter anywhere in this country saying such a thing?

But, I digress.  I'm glad that issues aren't the determining  factor as to what qualifies as a Southern blog.  I think that by virtue of our experience and our environment, we cannot help but bring a Southern perspective to what we write.

  •  Forgot to say this earlier (none / 1)

But it would be great to get this diary recommended and give it a little more visibility. Up to y'all.

We'll try posting it again in a couple days to make sure we don't miss folks ...

http://www.dailybailout.com is a great one.  John is also a blogger on the Kos: southlib.
In the next month, our local Hamilton County Democratic Party will have a blog on it and that should be fun.  It is http://www.hamdems.org
    Hope my links worked.
  •  Mississippi Blog (none / 0)

Reiblog has a progressive thread called "Ritalin for the Left." I am a solo attorney in Gulfport MS, with a substantial public interest environmental practice as part of the mix. Free time is spent painting or getting out on the islands when weather permits. Y'all come visit.
